TULIP: Unconditional Election

Tulip: Unconditional Election

  • T- Total Depravity
  • U- Unconditional Election
  • L- Limited Atonement
  • I- Irresistible Grace
  • P- Perseverance of the Saints

This week for school, we watched a short video of R.C. Sproul explaining what Unconditional Election means. Unconditional Election, also known as the "U" in Tulip, is the second part of the five points of basic Calvinism. The meaning "Unconditional Election" means that when God elects the elect, he doesn't choose people by random, he chooses them for his good purpose, for because he called who he elected, they who he has chosen will serve the Lord willingly. One way I know this is because in the Bible it was that He foreknew us. Just by this statement, I know that he doesn't choose people at random, but for a purpose.

  1. Josiah- Your basic concept sounds good - I just have a question about "for he knows that they will serve the Lord willingly". I was taught when I was younger that God 'looked down the corridor of time and saw who would be positive towards Him and he then chose them." That shows some goodness in us which is not true. Your statement "for he knows that they will serve the Lord willingly" sounds a bit like what I was taught, when, in fact, we cannot and will not serve the Lord willingly without God calling us and changing our hearts. Philippians 2:13 tells us 'for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." You may want to reword that part so it is not confusing. I am pleased that you are learning this truth that some find hard to accept, yet is taught in God's Word.
