Gulliver's Travels book report

Gulliver Travels

The Book, Gulliver's Travels, is a fictional book written by Jonathan Swift. Throughout the book, Gulliver's Travels, you join Gulliver as he experiences some adventures of a lifetime. From being stranded on shore on a remote island with little 6 inch people everywhere to a mysterious place where 60-foot giants roam around their land. There is never a dull moment in this gripping story. While reading the book, you can tell Jonathan really used some of his creative mind to create such an elaborate and delightful storyline.

The beginning of Gulliver's Travels starts with introducing Gulliver as a surgeon who loves adventures and traveling. Later, after taking up an offer to be a ship's surgeon, he is shipwrecked and stranded on an unfamiliar Island. He is later captured by the island's 6-inch inhabitants, called the Lilliputians, and is taken as prisoner. While his time in Lilliput, Gulliver learns a lot about Lilliput and how they handle things such as war methods. After a little bit, Gulliver goes to Blefuscu and stays there for a while.

After leaving Blefuscu, Gulliver enters mysterious lands that no man has ever discovered. He visits an island, Brobdingnag, populated by 60 ft giants. Gulliver from the very beginning is scared for his life but later is taken care of well by a family of giants and the queen. Gulliver's third voyage took him to Laputa, there, he met the laputians who are creative, over-thinkers, and are immortal. Gulliver’s fourth and final voyage took him to a place called Houyhnhnms, a place where there are horses who act like humans and humans, who act like beasts. Here, Gulliver stays here for a few years, engaging in how the inhabitants act. Soon, Gulliver realizes that it is time that he returns to England with his family.

During all of Gulliver’s voyages, Gulliver experiences different perspectives on each journey. Beginning with Lilliput, he was a giant compared to the 6 inch Lilliputians. Because of this, I'm sure the Lilliputians viewed Gulliver as a threat and a monster. During his journey to Brobdingnag, Gulliver feared for his life because of how he viewed them, probably as a dangerous monster that would eat him in one bite. He later learned that they were very welcoming, especially the family that took care of him. On his third journey, he gets to visit with Laputians who are immortal; something Gulliver is not familiar with, especially interacting with someone who is immortal. Finally, with Gulliver’s last visit, he experiences a world totally opposite from the one he is used to, the animal acts like a human, then the human acts like an animal.

I really enjoyed this book and its storyline. This book was very creative and is a one of a kind. I found all the characters, islands, and the creatures all very entertaining and intriguing, making each character with a purpose. I think Jonathan Swift did a great job on this book and how he laid it out. I would recommend this book to middle school to high school age group only because of the big words and the busy storyline. Overall, I liked this book and how Jonathan Swift was able to put a message through an entertaining book.
